Treasures

Birch gave me these yesterday for Mother's Day. He arranged to have a local couple that has a bronzing business to pick them up and deliver them back to him at work. I can't believe I never noticed they were missing from the mantle in the basement.

My mom bought these for Holt when he was about two and he's worn boots every day since. He wore them until the toe began to peel away from the sole. He wore them with shorts, bathing trunks, church clothes, his Halloween costume and everything in between. We would walk up and down the sidewalk in front of Juliana's school in Louisville, Holt in shorts and these boots that came almost up to his knees. It is impossible to see these and not picture him at two. You now know why I love them so much.

After making sure Birch knew how fabulous, sentimental, thoughtful and other synonymous adjectives he was, I let him know that if he ever makes me open something like that again at Chili's or any other public establishment, I shall kick him in the shins.

And when I got home I was given a most precious gift indeed, a hand-written letter from my eldest. I won't share it all. It is, after all a personal letter from a daughter to her mama, but I wanted to share just this:

If you weren't my mama I would love mine because she was my mama, but no one would be a better mama than you and I would be very jealous of the girl that got you as a mama because you are the best mama a girl could EVER wish for.... You know what to say to make me feel tons better even when you are sad sometimes yourself.

A treasure.

They don't even realize that they are all the gifts I need.
