T-ball Season 2009

This year was Holt's second year so we knew what to expect. Birch was head coach and Juliana was second base coach. I was so proud of her. I figured she'd coach one game and change her mind, but she stuck it out game after game barefooted out in the red dirt field. The other teams didn't usually have a second base coach so she usually ended up coaching that position for the other team as well.

Holt seemed a little bit more serious about it this year. When he was on base, his fists would be clenched waiting for the next batter to hit the ball so he could take off. Several times he ran out of his batting helmet. Some times up at bat he would have to hit it off the tee, but more often this year he could contact with the pitch.

Last year his favorite part of the game was the snack at the end, but I think this year he was more into the game itself. And he really enjoys the camaraderie with the other boys.

Holt sweats more than any kid I have ever met. Every game concluded with a trip to the bathtub.

Mouse liked Holt's practices much better than the games. During practices, she and I would walk over to the playground, but for games she had to melt in the stands covered in sunscreen waiting for it to end. She has expressed no interest in someday playing herself.

This is really one of our only secular activities, and Birch began and ended each practice and game with prayer. He asked at the beginning of the season and none of the parents were openly opposed to it, and several were encouraged in their public faith.

While I won't miss the 93 degree hour plus long sweatfest, I will miss the fact that my son will never again play six year old t-ball. Thank you God for cameras, words and memories.
